It’s going to be a young and inexperienced side that represents Brunei in the upcoming 4th Southeast Asia Men’s Basketball Championship in Manila, Philippines and for that reason alone, the Brunei Basketball Association are not placing any lofty expectations on their youngsters.
Without the use of several key players, national coach Hamzah Bilal Yahya Jihad has been forced to select a makeshift squad that consists of some newcomers.
Lim Boon Teck is the oldest player in the squad at 28 years of age but beyond that the rest of the players are in their early 20s or late teens, an indication of the inexperience of the side.
None of the authorities are putting any undue pressure on the players, a sentiment made clear by Mr. Goh King Tiam, President of the BBA, who said,”We just want them to get some experience under their belts.
“We have had problems with several players who due to their work commitments and exams could not make the team.”
Players like Goh Boon Tiong, Goh Kiat Chun and Fong Yeh Leong were not available and according to Hamzah, their services will be missed.
“Of course we will miss them, but there’s no use going on about players who can’t play.
“We have a squad now and we have to make the most of it. It’s going to be a tall order in Manila.
“All I expect from these players is their dedication and commitment. As long as they play hard and work hard, I will be happy.
“It would be unfair to expect anything more from them,” said Hamzah.
The squad will be led by head of delegate Chai Tze Yun and team manager Mak Pok Yee.
The players are Hj Md Zulikram Hj Awang Damit, Lim Aik Hock, Jackson Hsu, Henry Chong Yit Hing, Hj Md Sofrian Hj Md Yusof, Mark See, Lim Boon Teck, Daniel Chung Kok Meng, Ho Hee Lee, Lim How, Philip Chow Kok Meng and Hong Jhy Jye.
The squad will depart tomorrow morning and the competition will start Monday April 2 to Saturday April 7.
