[2009.03.23] Wu Chun Refuses to Wear Loincloth while Performing Taiko Drums

For Fahrenheit’s concert in Malaysia, Wu Chun was hard at working practicing Taiko drums. After three days of practice, other than getting sore lower back muscles, he also ended up with 11 blisters on his hands. However he gritted his teeth and continued practicing in order to display his manly side. He also refused to put on the loincloth that was often seen on Taiko drummers.
In Fahrenheit’s concert in Hong Kong, Wu Chun suffered a fracture in his left heel when he landed too fast from the wires. Seeing the March 28th concert in Malaysia was fast approaching, he had no choice but to change his solo talent performance at the last minute. His choice was Taiko drums which he felt was very manly.
The piece that he planned to perform for the concert will last over a minute. After only three days of practice, when Wu Chun showed his hands, there were 11 blisters on all ten fingers.
Wu Chun complained: [It kept hurting. It affected everything every day. It was inconvenient to do anything.] He also worried that there would not be enough practice for him to take the stage confidently. Each night at home, with his mind filled with drum beats, he would pretend pens were drumsticks and continued to practice.
Other than such superficial injuries, Wu Chun said with a laugh that when he saw his teacher’s demonstration on the first day, it looked powerfully beautiful. In his anxiety to emulate the movements, he did not use the right amount of force and ended up straining his lower back muscle. It hurt so badly that he could not sleep for two nights and had to go to emergency to have his back x-rayed. Adding this injury to his foot injury from which he was still recovering, Wu Chun was one injured soldier. His record company added another NTW $5M insurance for his hands.
Wouldn’t he need to put on the traditional loincloth when performing Taiko drums? After Wu Chun examined the very brief piece of cloth carefully, he laughed: [There is no way I am going to put this on. I am afraid that instead of people paying attention to me playing the drums, they would only focus on my bum moving. I won’t wear it even if only seen from the back.] However, now that he became interested in playing the drums, he wanted to bring a set back to Brunei, [In the future, I can beat on the drums to wake my children.]
